El camino de A a B

Hace meses os conté sobre una canción en la que colaboro con mi amigo y productor Gus. Aunque no lo dije, tenía en mente lanzarla este sábado, 5 de Mayo. Pero resulta que aún le queda bastante trabajo y ya ni me atrevo a ponerle fecha.

Veréis, cuando quieres caminar del punto A al punto B lo que se suele hacer es buscar el camino más corto y ya. Pero en un proceso creativo la cosa no es tan sencilla, porque por cada tres o cuatro metros que avanzas debes retroceder un par y desviarte otro. El resultado tarda en llegar, pero suele ser mejor y además viene acompañado.

En este caso en particular, la canción todavía no tiene ni coro, pero en el proceso de búsqueda de ese coro han nacido otras dos canciones igual de buenas y que sí parecen estar cogiendo forma más rápidamente. Así que no hemos estado de brazos cruzados, simplemente hemos tomado el camino más interesante ;)

Teamwork

"Si vas solo, llegarás rápido. Si vas acompañado, llegarás lejos."

Está parafraseado y ni siquiera recuerdo dónde lo escuché. Quizás me lo dijo mi mujer. En ese caso lo recuerdo perfectamente mi amor. Y si no fuiste tú, entonces era broma.

A lo que iba: equipo. Cuando tienes una familia, trabajo, y otras mil cosas, no es fácil encontrar aliados para colaborar en un proyecto musical, y menos aun encontrar el tiempo para coincidir y ponerlo en marcha.

Llevo meses conspirando con mi buen amigo Gus para crear algo juntos. Además de un gran músico y mejor persona (¿o era al revés?), ya trabajó conmigo en Lost and Found, como productor, técnico de sonido, y guitarrista. Siempre ha creído en mí y en nuestro proyecto, y cuando la falta de tiempo le ha impedido colaborar de manera tan activa, por lo menos ha servido como asesor en la mayoría de mis temas. Así que cuando creo que tengo una buena idea, grabo un prototipo y se lo envío. Me gusta consultar con él porque es transparente en sus opiniones, considerado en cómo las expresa, y suele tener sugerencias muy interesantes. No siempre le gusta lo que le envío, y también es por eso por lo que confío en él, porque tiene buen gusto y si algo no le acaba, también lo dice. Ésta fue su reacción a la grabación que le envié la semana pasada:

Así que comenzaremos por ahí. Y con este prestigioso productor en mi bando, la cosa promete.

Lo siento

Esta disculpa es para ti, y también para mí. Verás, nos he fallado a ambos.

Anunciar un nuevo EP sin tenerlo del todo claro no parecía tan mala idea. De hecho conozco otros músicos independientes que funcionan bien de ese modo, así que decidí lanzarme a la piscina y probarlo. Pero el experimento fue un fracaso.

Confieso que me vi tentado a borrar todo rastro de mi vergonzoso fail, pero he decidido conservarlo como parte de esta historia. Además no me sentiría bien simplemente ocultándolo como si no hubiese ocurrido. En su lugar, seguiré adelante adaptándome a las circunstancias. Y dándoos una mala noticia y otra buena.

La mala: por ahora no hay EP.

La buena: sí habrá canciones. Y "pronto".

De momento estoy trabajando en una, pero tengo más en el tintero y no esperaré a tenerlas listas todas para compartirlas contigo. Iremos paso a paso. 

La verdad es que podría contar con los dedos de dos manos la cantidad de personas que me han reclamado ese album que no llegué a publicar. Por eso podría pensar que no le importa a casi nadie. Pero a veces incluso una persona es suficiente para que merezca la pena. Así que si estás leyendo esto, gracias por estar ahí.

He aparcado la música demasiado tiempo, por varios -y aburridos de explicar- motivos. Cuando intento retomarlo comienzo así

Si ya he podido lanzar dos EPs, sé que podría hacerlo de nuevo. Pero no estoy seguro de que ahora mismo ése sea el camino, así que se me ocurrió otra idea -de la cuál os hablaré en otro momento.

Lo que traigo hoy pretende ser un reinicio. Necesitaba desatascarme, recordarme a mí mismo de lo que soy capaz. Así que el otro día escuché de nuevo los 8 temas que ya he publicado. Al hacerlo, una de las canciones me habló. Siempre quise hacerle un lyric video, así que, ¿por qué no comenzar por ahí?

No os voy a aburrir con los motivos por los que escogí esa fecha de lanzamiento para el 3er EP de Lound, pero confieso que fue demasiado ambiciosa y lo supe en todo momento. Aun así me aventuré, porque la inspiración es caprichosa y nunca se sabe.

Para que te hagas una idea, aunque en mi primer proyecto trabajé un año entero en una de las canciones, todas las demás las escribí, grabé, y mezclé en tres meses. Así que cumplir el plazo no era tan descabellado.

Podría decepcionarme por el retraso y poner mil excusas, pero en lugar de eso te contaré que poner ese deadline funcionó para lo más importante: el disco está en marcha y cogiendo forma.

¿Fecha definitiva? Esta vez no me atrevo a precisar, pero apunto a verano.

Una ardilla inesperada

Para tener listo mi tercer EP a tiempo, tengo que aprovechar cada minuto. Los jueves voy al trabajo en tren, así que de camino aproveché y comencé oficialmente el proceso de revisar notas de voz. Me he encontrado algunas melodías interesantes que podrían transformarse en canciones. Pero lo que quiero compartir hoy es otra cosa, y es que me encontré con un pequeño tesoro olvidado.

Veréis, normalmente los músicos sólo mostramos lo que “suena correcto”, y todo lo demás se queda perdido en la intimidad de las paredes de casa. Pero a veces ponemos a grabar el móvil en momentos en los que improvisamos un poco, rascamos mal la guitarra, y hasta desafinamos. Algunos a eso lo llaman naturalidad.

Bueno, el caso es que me encontré una grabación algo cutre y sencillota del 2015, antes de publicar Life Is Today. Dicha grabación capturó un borrador de When You Smile en compañía de alguien muy especial. La ardillita que se oye de fondo es mi hija Noemí. Y cuando dice “you light up that beautiful face”, me derrito. Escuchad.

This is NOT a new year’s resolution

I have nothing against new beginnings, and I respect anyone who sees in January an opportunity to set goals. But I see the calendar in a different way. I think we set our own beginnings, even on a Wednesday like today. So it’s a coincidence that I’m talking about this in between years.

And what’s “this”? Well, the announcement of a new EP. I have not written the songs yet, I just have a couple ideas. But I want to announce it’s happening, and with a date. It’s supposed to fuel my progress by giving me certain pressure to meet a deadline. So let’s try it out and see.

Esto NO es un propósito de año nuevo

No tengo nada en contra de los nuevos comienzos, y respeto a los que ven en Enero una oportunidad para proponerse metas. Pero yo veo el calendario de otro modo, más como una manera de compartimentar el tiempo que como un separador de etapas. Creo que el principio de algo lo marcamos nosotros y da igual que hoy sea miércoles. Por eso es pura casualidad que me esté proponiendo esto a puntito de comenzar el nuevo año.

¿Y qué es “esto”? Pues el anuncio de un nuevo EP. No tengo las canciones escritas, sólo ideas sueltas. Pero quiero anunciar desde ya que va a ocurrir. Además, inspirándome en un músico independiente al que admiro, le voy a poner fecha. Se supone que ese compromiso contigo me dé cierta presión de la buena, de la que motiva a avanzar. Así que vamos a probarlo a ver qué pasa.

Well, the Crowd Reviews for the new EP came in yesterday, and they were pretty nice!

Of course there was room for constructive (and destructive) criticism. But for the most part, they were awesome! See some examples below.

New EP title and tracklist

I’ve been recording and mixing a lot for the last couple of weeks, and even had the honor to feature some friend’s voices in the new songs. I can finally see it come together, and that’s why I think it’s time to announce the title. Here goes:

Life is today.

I love it when something so simple hides such a powerful message. And yes, I’m aware it’s a concept I already explored (Happening) but it has so much meaning that I know this won’t be the last time I’ll sing about it.

He estado grabando y mezclando mucho últimamente, y hasta he tenido el honor de incluir las voces de algunos amigos en las nuevas canciones. Por fin veo cómo va cogiendo forma, y por eso creo que es el momento de anunciar el título. Ahí va:

Me encanta cuando algo tan sencillo esconde un mensaje tan potente. Y sí, soy consciente de que es un concepto que he explorado anteriormente (Happening) pero tiene tanto significado que sé que no será la última vez que cante sobre ello. 

Y así se llaman las canciones que incluye:

¡¿Eso es todo?! ¿No estoy dándole demasiada importancia a tres míseras canciones? Por supuesto que sí. Eso es lo que ocurre cuando pones tanto de ti mismo en algo. Que te importa.

No es fácil encontrar tiempo e inspiración incluso para hacer lo que más nos gusta, pero tarde o temprano ocurre. Y ahora por fin puedo confirmar que mi segundo EP está en marcha.

Hi again

I haven’t posted much around here for many reasons. The first, the thought that no one will read this. But the fact that YOU are, already makes it worth it ;)

The second, I’ve been busy figuring some things out. Last year I released my very first piece of music. A 5-song-EP that I crafted with my hands, voice, and soul. That itself has been a dream come true. But (melodrama alert) after the dream came the nightmare, and I have learned a lot since then.

I thought the music was pretty good, so I focused all my energy on trying to get it heard (or even bought). Of course I had no idea of how complicated that was going to be. I’ll be honest, I’ve sold a dozen copies of my album (including my mom). Though I can count by thousands the plays via free online streaming, and that’s something.

I’ve also been very close to some interesting opportunities and made some connections that years ago I would have thought impossible. A guy that worked with Linkin Park listened to Happening and had a positive opinion about it, before adding that “it doesn’t sound like 2015”. Also, I almost got some radioplay both in the U.S. and Spain. Bummer that didn’t work out.

But the best thing that happened to me after release was obtaining mostly great feedback, which is awesome because there’s only one thing better than writing a song: having others enjoy it.

Well, all this just to tell you that I’ve decided to focus my energy on making new music. Because I want to and not because I'm hoping to reach millions of fans. Ok that would be cool too.

No he estado escribiendo demasiado por aquí por varias razones. La primera, pensar que nadie va a leer esto. Pero el hecho de que TÚ estés aquí ya hace que merezca la pena ;)

El año pasado publiqué mi primer trocito de música. Un EP de 5 canciones que creé con mis manos, mi voz, y mi alma. Eso en sí mismo ha sido un sueño hecho realidad. Pero (melodrama incoming) después del sueño vino la pesadilla, y he aprendido mucho desde entonces.

Me pareció que el disco era bueno, así que concentré mis esfuerzos en intentar que fuera escuchado, o mejor aún comprado. Por supuesto no tenía ni idea de lo complicado que iba a ser, y entonces vino la primera lección: humildad. Te seré sincero, he vendido una docena de discos (contando a mi madre). Aunque también es cierto que las reproducciones de mis canciones vía streaming gratuito superan el millar. Algo es algo.

Pero el que la sigue la consigue, no? Porque estuve cerca de tener oportunidades interesantes y establecí algunos contactos que años atrás me habrían parecido impensables. Quizás lo más destacado sea que un tipo que trabajó con Linkin Park escuchase Happening y tuviera una opinión sorprendentemente positiva, aunque luego añadiera “pero no suena a 2015”. Además, en dos ocasiones estuve a punto de sonar en la radio, tanto en Estados Unidos como en España. Y ahora que lo pienso, una de mis canciones sí sonó en una emisora de mi Puerto Rico natal.

Hablando de Puerto Rico, todavía sonrío con este titular.

Hay varias cosas que me hacen gracia, pero sin duda alguna lo mejor es el uso del verbo triunfar.

Por lo demás, he obtenido un feedback muy positivo en su mayoría. Y sólo hay una cosa mejor que escribir una canción: que alguien la disfrute. Así que misión cumplida en ese sentido. 

Bueno, todo este rollo para contarte que he decidido concentrar mi energía en hacer más música. Porque quiero y no porque crea que voy a alcanzar a millones de fans. Vale, eso también molaría.
